USA President Issues Executive Orders Targeting Tencent’s WeChat and TikTok
US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order to ban all WeChat transactions from Tencent. This ban is coinciding with the same order targeting TikTok, which will take place in 45 days.
The order was mandated because the US claims that TikTok and WeChat are funnelling the personal data of Americans and Chinese citizens in the USA to the Chinese Communist Party.
The order’s wordings may be vague to the point that people are concerned it may affect Tencent’s gaming properties like League of Legends, Valorant, Fortnite, and most Unreal Engine titles. Tencent owns Riot Games, 40 percent of Epic Games, and 5 percent of Activision Blizzard. But rest assured that it’s only targeting transactions related to WeChat.
“The following actions shall be prohibited beginning 45 days after the date of this order, to the extent permitted under applicable law: any transaction that is related to WeChat by any person, or with respect to any property, subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, with Tencent Holdings Ltd.”
TikTok was desperate enough to be bought by Microsoft just to avoid this order, so you know this is serious business.
