PUBG Cuts Ties With India’s Tencent: What’s Next?
By Alleef Ashaari|September 9, 2020|0 Comment
Last week, the government of India officially banned over 118 Chinese apps, including (most notably) PUBG Mobile. Now, in an attempt to salvage the game’s presence in the country, South Korean developer PUBG Corporation has announced that Tencent will no longer be the publisher for the mobile battle royale game in India.
For the past several years, Tencent has been publishing and distributing PUBG Mobile in India, but now the developer will be taking over the publishing rights in the country. However, it’s currently unclear how this will affect their relationship with Tencent, considering that Tencent is still the publisher of PUBG Mobile in the rest of the world.
To make things even more complicated, Tencent is more than just a publisher. Several of its internal studios like LightSpeed & Quantum and Timi Studios are involved in the development of PUBG Mobile-related content.
In an official statement on their official website, PUBG Corporation said:
In light of recent developments, PUBG Corporation has made the decision to no longer authorize the PUBG MOBILE franchise to Tencent Games in India.
Moving forward, PUBG Corporation will take on all publishing responsibilities within the country.
As the company explores ways to provide its own PUBG experience for India in the near future, it is committed to doing so by sustaining a localized and healthy gameplay environment for its fans.
The conflict and tensions between India and China continue to escalate, negatively impacting almost everything, including the games industry. India was one of the top markets for PUBG Mobile, having over 40 million active users in the country, according to TechCrunch.
As of now, PUBG Mobile is still banned in India. It remains to be seen if PUBG Corporation’s move will ultimately change the situation.
