Nintendo Switch Bans Nicknames Like “Covid” and “Nazi” In Latest Update

The Nintendo Switch received a new firmware update yesterday. It didn’t do anything major. Unless you happen to like using offensive phrases as nicknames.

The 1.2 firmware update extends the system’s list of banned phrases which include the following:

  • “KKK”
  • “slave”
  • “Nazi”
  • “acab”
  • “Covid”

Words like “KKK” and “Nazi” are banned for obvious reasons. “acab”? Turns out it recently means “all cops are bastards” and are referring to the recent Black Lives Matter and anti-policing slogans going on. “Covid” has also been used as a toxic troll phrase in online circles as of late thanks to the pandemic.

While this is all well and good, it is a bit odd that such measures exist for Nintendo Switch and its “safe from toxicity compared to PC and other platforms” aura, given that users can’t directly message one another on the console.
