Microsoft Xbox Acquires Bethesda [Update]

Microsoft has announced that they have acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks.

These include developers such as Bethesda Softworks, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, ZeniMax Online Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog, and Roundhouse Studios. These are the teams responsible for franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Wolfenstein, DOOM, Dishonored, Prey, Quake, Starfield and many more.

According to Microsoft, what this means is that they will be adding Bethesda’s iconic franchises to Xbox Game Pass for console and PC.

According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Microsoft paid a whopping US$7.5 billion for Bethesda.

Though Bethesda has been working closely with Sony with titles like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo, Microsoft will honour those agreements Bethesda has previously done. Both games will be on the PS5 for a fixed period of time before coming to Xbox. Xbox chief Phil Spencer said that Microsoft will keep that commitment.

Future titles like Starfield, the next Elder Scrolls, and even a new Fallout will be available exclusively for Xbox and PC. “We’ll take other consoles on a case-by-case basis”, he added.
