The Best Video Games Of This Console Generation (Late 2013-2020)

#7. XCOM 2 (2016)

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Genre: Turn-Based Strategy

In the sci-fi strategy game XCOM 2, time is always a-ticking and the best we can do is make the right choices when we have the chance. This title imparts the weight of those decisions, and that’s what makes it extraordinary.

With its gameplay both old and new meshing together cohesively, XCOM 2 ends up being mathematical, emotional, challenging, and thoughtful all at once. It’s exhilarating, even in the face of failure. And you will see that proverbial mistress a lot, no questions asked. Still, it teaches you to keep persevering much like the soldiers and factions fighting against the already-victorious aliens.

XCOM 2 is a compelling strategy and base management game that will keep going at you until you break. Victory is the goal, but that’s just an afterthought here–it’s the complex journey that counts. And with the game’s many, many systems and strategy mechanics that are way superior to its predecessors, it’s no wonder why this eclectic niche genre game gets the top spot here on Kakuchopurei.
