It’s only a matter of time until someone made a combination of the Yakuza games with the 2D Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle titles. Who knew that it would be Sega of all people to do this?
To celebrate Sega’s 60th anniversary, Sega is making a free Streets of Rage 2D parody game featuring the Yakuza brand called Streets of Kamurocho. You control either Kazuma Kiryu or Goro Majima, two of the most famous characters in the game, and clean up Kamurocho with your own brand of street justice. If the game’s lifebars and some of its 2D assets and animations look familiar, that’s because some of it is lifted from Streets of Rage 2.
It’s developed by Empty Clip Studios with Sega’s huge blessing. It’ll be available for download from 17th-19th October, so grab it then before it’s gone forever.
In related news, Sega is also releasing a bunch of free new games with retro callbacks like:
- A retro-inspired multiplayer tank game & riff on Call of Heroes called Armor of Heroes, available 15th-19th October,
- A mish-mash of Fantasy Zone and The Endless series called Endless Zone, available 16th-19th October,
- A free copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2,
- A build of a never-before-seen canned beat-em-up project called Golden Axed.
