A Malaysian-Based Studio Was Involved In The Mandalorian

The first episode of The Mandalorian Season 2 just debuted yesterday, and it was pretty great (check out my spoiler-free review here). However, there was another interesting detail, not in the episode itself, but strangely enough, during the credits.

It turns out that a VFX studio based in Malaysia, Base FX, is responsible for partially contributing to the special effects in The Mandalorian. This was discovered by our friends at BuzzPop, who noticed that The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) was mentioned in the credits for The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 1 ‘Chapter 9: The Marshal’.

The Mandalorian is eligible for FINAS’ Film In Malaysia Incentive (FIMI), which grants a 30 percent subsidy from the government. The only requirements for a TV series to qualify for this subsidy is for it to spend a minimum of RM385,000 (or roughly US$492,000) per hour.

To clarify, the subsidy acts as an incentive for companies and creatives in Malaysia. In this case, that’s Base FX. The purpose of this is to develop local talent from the creative industry in Malaysia, thereby attracting international film productions and post-production activities to Malaysia.

This FINAS initiative ultimately benefits Malaysians in the creative and arts industries. Don’t worry, your taxpaying money isn’t going into the pockets of Pedro Pascal or Jon Favreau.

Besides Kuala Lumpur, Base FX also has studios in China and in Los Angeles. They specialize in high-end creature and character animation, fluid and dynamic effects, and photo-real 3D matte painting and set extensions.
