Netflix December 2020: Our Highlights & Picks

Since everyone is (still mostly) staying home because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, I’m sure you won’t want to waste time sifting through Netflix’s extensive catalogue of shows and movies just to decide on what to watch. The streaming giant updates its site every day, week, and month with new content, so I’m here to save your precious time.

Here are my personal recommendations and highlights for Netflix Malaysia’s December 2020 lineup and how to fill up your free time with worthwhile content at home:

Mank (4 December 2020)

Directed by acclaimed director David Fincher (of Seven, Fight Club, and The Social Network fame), Mank is a biographical drama about the life of Herman J. Mankiewicz as he wrote the legendary movie Citizen Kane (1941), as well as the problems that arose with Orson Welles during production and leading up to the film’s release.

It stars Gary Oldman as Herman J. Mankiewicz, and a star-studded cast that includes Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, Tuppence Middleton, Tom Burke, and Charles Dance.

Detention (5 December 2020)

Detention is a supernatural horror drama based on the video game of the same name developed by Red Candle Games (the same studio behind the controversial 2019 horror game Devotion).

Set in the period of martial law known as the White Terror in Taiwan, Detention entwines the suffocating political situations under martial law and heart-stopping legends of local deities, portraying a labyrinth of unspeakable oppression.

The synopsis reads:

A tormented student uncovers unsettling secrets at her remote high school as betrayal and a paranormal encounter upend her life.

Alice In Borderland (10 December 2020)

Alice In Borderland is a live-action adaptation of the manga of the same name about a video-game-obsessed young man finds himself in a strange version of Tokyo where he and other visitors must compete in deadly games to survive.

The Prom (11 December 2020)

The Prom is a new musical movie directed by Ryan Murphy and adapted to the screen by Chad Beguelin and Bob Martin, from their and Matthew Sklar’s 2018 Broadway musical of the same name.

The film stars Meryl Streep, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Andrew Rannells, Ariana DeBose, Kerry Washington, and Jo Ellen Pellman.

The Midnight Sky (23 December 2020)

Directed by and starring George Clooney, The Midnight Sky is a science fiction movie based on the novel Good Morning, Midnight by Lily Brooks-Dalton.

It also stars Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, Demián Bichir, Kyle Chandler, and Caoilinn Springall.

The synopsis reads:

This post-apocalyptic tale follows Augustine (George Clooney), a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully (Felicity Jones) and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.

Clooney directs the adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s acclaimed novel Good Morning, Midnight, co-starring David Oyelowo, Kyle Chandler, Demián Bichir and Tiffany Boone.

Transformers War For Cybertron Earthrise (30 December 2020)

In July 2020, Netflix released the first part of the new CG animated series Transformers War For Cybertron with the six-episode Chapter 1: Siege. The second chapter, Earthrise, now has a release date.

The synopsis reads:

With the Allspark gone, Megatron is forced to confront the harsh reality that his Decepticons are trapped on a dying Cybertron.

Meanwhile, lost in the darkest reaches of space, Optimus Prime and his team embark on a desperate mission, unexpectedly running into … the spacefaring Mercenaries.

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina Part 4 (31 December 2020)

Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft.

Over the course of Part 4’s eight episodes, The Eldritch Terrors will descend upon Greendale. The coven must fight each terrifying threat one-by-one (The Weird, The Returned, The Darkness to name a few), all leading up to…The Void, which is the End of All Things.

As the witches wage war, with the help of The Fright Club, Nick begins to slowly earn his way back into Sabrina’s heart, but will it be too late?

This will be the final season of the series.

Those are just several selected highlights from next month’s offerings of new TV series and movies on Netflix. Now you can plan your Netflix binge-fest for December 2020.
