KKP Best Of 2020: Game #14

For more 2020 best games content, head here.
It’s slim pickings for fighting games this year, unless you count season passes for Tekken 7 and new expansions for Mortal Kombat 11 and Street Fighter 5. But our lone pick, Granblue Fantasy Versus, is impressive on its own merits.
For casual players, you have a 2D fighting game with easy inputs, a fighting game engine that prioritizes fundamentals of fighting games over intricate combos, a lovely art style and background music, and a variety of characters to pick from (especially with Season 2 out). For seasoned fighting game veterans, the character choices and playstyles here are pretty meaty, from rushdown characters to zoners, with a grappler and heavy hitter added in for good measure.
GBVS is clearly meant to bring both amateurs and veterans together with its RPG and versus/online modes. While I do wish the game’s DLC practice of charging a lot for season passes need to stop, it nonetheless fills the niche of new fighting game for players to experiment and play with. Coupled with a nice RPG story mode with nifty bosses to fight against, and you’re in for an anime fighter treat.
Besides, what the hell else are you going to play competitively this year: My Hero’s One Justice 2 and One Punch Man: A Hero Nobody Knows? Please… you have to be a sellout of an awards show to validate those “fighting” games in your 2020 nomination list.
