KKP Best Of 2020: Game #4

For more 2020 gaming goodness, head here.

#4: Cyberpunk 2077 (PC, Xbox Series, PS5)

CD Projekt Red’s magnum opus CRPG of 2020 is obviously an undercooked broth that needs more time on the stove if December’s many game-related headlines are of any indication. Heck, it’s hard to excuse the fiasco the company has put itself into, what with the years of crunch on the title and how it handled the launch and post-launch bits.

Still, you can’t discount the game’s many, many positives in its story, free-form gameplay, oodles of lore and narrative elements, and its aesthetics focused on hyper-sexualized culture and corporate exploitation. A game that, when it runs smoothly, is one of 2020’s most immersive and ambitious open-world RPGs that hits all the right story beats & emotional notes, from the Japantown chase to even the many endings at your fingertips. Assuming you put in the work doing sidequests, that is.

You’ll laugh, cry, and wince at the side stories involving Delamain, River’s nephew, and one involving a convict claiming to be the next messiah. You’ll miss Panam, Judy, Takemura, and Keanu Reeves Johnny Silverhand when your adventure ends.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a definite must-try for everyone who’s got the right machine to run it, be it a PC or any of the next-gen consoles. This 70/100 game would be an actual 90/100 title assuming CDPR get their act right in the next few months.
