Titans Season 3 will feature a live-action version of Barbara Gordon, and we now know who will be portraying the fan-favourite character.
According to Variety, Savannah Welch has been cast as Barbara Gordon in the upcoming HBO Max series. In Titans Season 3, the former Batgirl is now is Gotham City Police Commissioner. Her career as a vigilante was prematurely ended when she was shot and paralyzed by the Joker, leaving her wheelchair-bound.
This version of Barbara Gordon is described as having a combative relationship with Bruce Wayne, but her life gets more complicated when Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) returns to Gotham, rekindling their old romance and starting a new crime-fighting partnership.
Welch is probably best known for her role in the History Channel military drama Six; in which she played a Marine who suffered an amputation in combat. She has also appeared in smaller roles in movies like Boyhood and The Tree Of Life. She is part of the disabled community, having lost one of her legs after an accident in 2016.
This won’t be the first live-action portrayal of Barbara Gordon, but this will likely be the first time that the iconic wheelchair-bound version of the character is getting adapted for live-action. It will be interesting to see how Titans will depict the relationship between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon.
Previously, Yvonne Craig played the character alongside the late Adam West’s Batman in the classic 1960s while Dina Meyer also played the character in the short-lived Birds Of Prey series. However, more people will likely remember the Batgirl from 1997’s Batman & Robin, though Alicia Silverstone played a character named Barbara Wilson who’s not actually related to any Gordons. This makes a different character entirely and not Barbara Gordon.
Titans Season 3 is currently in production and will premiere exclusively on HBO Max, following the shutdown of the DC Universe streaming service.
