You Can Now Create Your Own Mods In Cyberpunk 2077, Officially

CD Projekt has made it official: its hit(?) RPG Cyberpunk 2077 will feature modding support.

The company has released its first official modding support tools for the game effective immediately; PC version, obviously. This is in line with what CD Projekt’s global community lead Marcin Momot said previously in 2019:

“Obviously, we would love to support the modding community in the future, but for the time being we want to focus on releasing the game first.”

Here is the list of tools for now; it’ll definitely grow as time goes by:

  • Metadata: Per game release, required by some of the tools.
  • ArchiveDump: A utility for listing contents of game data archives.
  • TweakDump: A utility for listing contents of game Tweak DB (game settings) binaries.
  • TweakDB IDs: A list of IDs of Tweak DB entries. Generated using TweakDump and tweakdb.str metadata.

Just one caveat though: CD Projekt reserves the right to shut down mods that let players have “sex” with Keanu Reeves’ character Johnny Silverhand. That means no swapping a joytoy skin with that of Johnny Silverhand. Here’s CD Projekt’s official stance:

“Our most important rule regarding user-generated content, game mods in particular, is that it can’t be harmful towards others. In the case of model swaps, especially those that involve explicit situations, it can be perceived as such by the people who lent us their appearance for the purpose of creating characters in Cyberpunk 2077.”

This is understandable, as CD Projekt do not want to harm its relationship with Keanu Reeves for future Johnny Silverhand appearances.

Due to the game’s buggy nature, the first few mods from the game (the ones that will be official starting now) will probably help stabilize and optimize the game for the better. Basically, this is a great way to get its passionate community to support their long-awaited game. We’ll be sure to list out our favourite Cyberpunk 2077 mods in a huge-ass list in the coming months.
