The Final Evangelion Film Did Pretty Well In Japan
Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time, the fourth entry in a series reboot about mechas and existential crises, just released in Japan cinemas on 8th March. And just like any major Japanese IP, it pretty well despite COVID-19 circumstances.
The film sold over 530,000 tickets for over US$7.3 million on its debut in 466 theatres (via Mantan Web). The film sold 21.7% more tickets and earned 23.8% more in revenue on its opening day than the previous film Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo back in 2012. Even after suffering numerous delays -with the latest being from 23rd January to 8th March- the film did really well in its regular, IMAX, MX4D, and 4DX screenings.
Will Evangelion 3.0+1.0 be out in Southeast Asian cinemas, now that cinemas are open (albeit with a few restrictions)? There’s no news on the film being released outside of Japan as of yet. In the meantime, you can check out the first 12 minutes of the film here, as well as the show’s theme song “One Last Kiss” by Utada Hikaru.
