Overwatch Gets Xbox Series Update, But Nothing For PS5 Players. Why?
Developer Blizzard has released a next-gen patch for Overwatch players, but only for the Xbox Series version.
The “optimized for Xbox Series X|S enhancements” include a graphics option that lets you switch between Resolution, Balanced, and Framerate mode.
However, there’s no news about the update available for the PS5 version of Overwatch. This may have a lot to do with the backwards compatibility nature of the PS5 developers need to create a full PS5 port of a game in order to enable 120fps for the console.
If you’ve noticed, games like Call of Duty: Warzone and Rocket League run at 120fp on the Xbox Series X because their respective publishers and developers quietly updated the Xbox versions with this patch. They didn’t do this for the PS5 version of the game. According to a quote from Rocket League developer Psyonix (via Eurogamer), enabling 120fps on the Xbox X and S versions require a minor patch, while doing the same thing for the PS5 requires a full native port.
“Our team’s main focus this year was our recent free to play transition and updating major features like our Tournaments system. Due to this we had to make tough decisions on what else we could achieve. Enabling 120hz on Xbox Series X|S is a minor patch, but enabling it on PS5 requires a full native port due to how backwards compatibility is implemented on the console, and unfortunately wasn’t possible due to our focus elsewhere.”
In other words, it’s a lot of work to do a full native port for PS5 games, compared to just uploading a simple update for the Xbox Series versions.
