Godzilla Vs Kong Crushes COVID-Era Box Office Records In Malaysia

Since it premiered on 24 March 2021, Godzilla Vs Kong is now the number one movie in Malaysia. The movie surpassed box office expectations and achieved regional revenues in Southeast Asia, India and Korea of US$25.2 million on its opening weekend, with US$2.1 million in Malaysia alone.

This made it the biggest industry opening for a movie during the COVID-19 era and the biggest opening weekend ever for a Warner Bros. MonsterVerse film. It also captured a whopping 90 percent of the market share. Godzilla Vs Kong also made history being the biggest IMAX opening of the Monster Universe in 13 international territories including India and Taiwan.

Meanwhile, in China, where the film opened on 26 March 2021 and is distributed by Legendary Pictures, it took US$70.3 million from 42,000 screens, with an 82 percent share of the box office.

Godzilla Vs Kong premiered in the U.S. on 31 March 2021 in cinemas and HBO Max simultaneously, while Japan will only receive the movie a few months later on 14 May 2021.
