Overwatch Is Getting Crossplay Support, 5 Years Later

Better late than never, right?

Blizzard Entertainment has announced that cross-platform play is coming to Overwatch. This will enable multiplayer between Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

To take part in Overwatch’s cross-play feature, players must have a Battle.net account and link it to their console accounts on PlayStation, Switch, or Xbox. The global update also merges Battle.net friends lists from different territories (with the exception of China) into a unified list.

However, there won’t be cross-progression support at launch, which means that level and cosmetics of players won’t carry over between platforms. Cross-play will be available in all Overwatch game modes, but cross-play will be limited in competitive mode.

How this works is that players on console will be matched with each other, while PC players will only be matched with other PC players when playing competitive mode. Overwatch players will be able to choose not to engage in cross-play, but they’ll only be matched with other players who have opted out, decreasing the pool of available matches.

According to the official FAQ, Overwatch’s cross-play beta will launch “soon”, but there is no release date yet. In the meantime, check out the developer update video below:
