RIP Richard Donner, The Man Who Made A Legit Superman Movie A Reality
Director Richard Donner has passed away. He was 91 years old according to a Variety report.
Richard Donner’s impact on cinema was legendary, to say the least. Not only did he directed The Goonies and Lethal Weapon, as well as produced the first legit X-Men film, but he was also behind the directing of the 1979 Superman film starring the late Christopher Reeve. He was supposed to return for Superman II, but production disputes took him out of the project despite Donner already finished with a good chunk of the sequel. Thus the legendary Superman II: The Richard Donner cut exists and is a good example of a definitive edition of an existing film made better because of the original director’s vision.
Prior to those milestones, he had a brief stint as an actor on The Twilight Zone, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and The Fugitive.
No cause of death was revealed at this point in time. He is survived by his wife Lauren Schuler Donner. Rest in peace, dear director, and thank you for making us believe a man can fly and superhero films possible.
