Black Widow Breaks Pandemic Box Office Records With Massive Opening Weekend
By Alleef Ashaari|July 12, 2021|0 Comment
Marvel Studios’ Black Widow finally premiered in selected countries around the world and Disney+ via Premier Access on 9 July 2021. It’s the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie in two years since 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home, and it proves that the Marvel movie magic is still there despite the ongoing pandemic.
According to Deadline, Black Widow generated over US$80 million in the US domestic market alone, with another US$78.8 million from 46 territories for a global theatrical debut of US$158.8 million. However, that’s not all. Add another US$60 million to that courtesy of Disney+ Premier Access, and we have a total global opening weekend debut of a whopping US$218.8 million, which is the best for a Hollywood movie since 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX The Rise Of Skywalker.
This is impressive considering that the movie didn’t open as widely in certain markets like China and Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. Still, this bodes well for the future of the franchise moving forward, especially since there are still three more MCU movies to premiere in the rest of 2021, including Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings in September, Eternals in November and Spider-Man No Way Home in December.
There’s no telling when Black Widow will be showing in Malaysian cinemas or on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia, as of now. In the meantime, you can check out our non-spoiler guide to the characters in the Black Widow movie by heading over here.
