Disney Strikes Back At Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow Lawsuit
By Alleef Ashaari|July 31, 2021|0 Comment
Yesterday, it was reported that Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney for a breach of contract caused by the movie Black Widow premiering on Disney’s streaming service Disney+ via Premiere Access.
As a result, Disney has provided an official statement on the matter (via Variety):
“There is no merit whatsoever to this filing.
The lawsuit is especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of ‘Black Widow’ on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the US$20 [million] she has received to date.”
Marvel Studios’ Black Widow finally premiered in selected countries around the world and Disney+ via Premier Access on 9 July 2021. It’s the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie in two years since 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home and broke post-pandemic records with a whopping US$218.8 million in its opening weekend alone.
There’s no telling when Black Widow will be showing in Malaysian cinemas or on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia, as of now. In the meantime, you can check out our non-spoiler guide to the characters in the Black Widow movie by heading over here.
