The Suicide Squad Scores Best R-Rated Opening Weekend But Still Underwhelmed
By Alleef AshaariVerified|August 9, 2021|0 Comment
Warner Bros’ and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad finally premiered in selected countries around the world and HBO Max on 6 August 2021.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Suicide Squad generated US$26.5 million from the domestic US market and US$45.7 million from the rest of the world, combining for a global worldwide total of US$72.2 million in its opening weekend.
While that might break the record for the best opening weekend for an R-Rated movie since the COVID-19 pandemic began last year, The Suicide Squad‘s opening weekend is still lower when compared to other recent Warner Bros’ movies (domestically) like Space Jam A New Legacy (US$31 million), but it’s higher than other 2021 R-rated movies like Mortal Kombat (US$23.3 million) and The Conjuring The Devil Made Me Do It (US$24.1 million).
That’s not even mentioning that The Suicide Squad cost a whopping US$185 million to make. Such a shame too, considering that from start to finish, director James Gunn makes full use of the movie’s R rating. It has more of a comic book vibe and it’s probably the most fun DCEU movie to date thanks to Gunn’s signature humour, gore, and stylistic choices.
HBO Max chief Andy Forssell said:
“As the country faces new challenges due to the COVID variant, we’re happy to continue to offer fans the option of viewing movies in their homes.
Many chose to do just that as The Suicide Squad emerged as the second most-viewed film over an opening weekend on HBO Max since we began day-and-date releases with theatres.â€
