Shang-Chi Punches His Way To A Record-Breaking Opening Weekend

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings finally premiered in selected countries around the world and Disney+ via Premier Access on 3 September 2021. It’s the second Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie in two years since 2019’s Spider-Man Far From Home, after Black Widow earlier this year, and it proves that the Marvel movie magic is still there despite the ongoing pandemic.

According to Deadline, Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings generated over US$83.5 million in the US domestic market alone, with another US$56.2 million from territories for a global theatrical debut of US$127.6 million.

This sets a new Labor Day weekend record previously held by Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007), which earned US$30.6 over the four-day frame. In addition, Shang-Chi also set a global Labor Day record for IMAX, with the film bringing in an estimated US$13.2 million.

In comparison, Black Widow‘s opening weekend was a whopping US$218.8 million, which is the best for a Hollywood movie since 2019’s Star Wars Episode IX The Rise Of Skywalker.

This is impressive considering that the movie didn’t open as widely in certain markets like China and Southeast Asia, including Malaysia. Still, this bodes well for the future of the franchise moving forward, especially since there are still two more MCU movies to premiere in the rest of 2021, including Eternals in November and Spider-Man No Way Home in December.

There’s no telling when Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings will be showing in Malaysian cinemas or on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia, as of now.
