Overwatch’s McCree Is Now Called Cole Cassidy

Overwatch’s best gunslinger has gone through a name change. Jesse McCree is no more; meet Cole Cassidy.

Here’s the statement from Blizzard, who changed the character’s name because he was labelled after an ex-Blizzard lead (named Jesse McCree) who was heavily involved in the workplace abuse and sexual harassment allegations that resulted in the company’s recent California-based lawsuit.

“Running from his past meant running from himself, and each passing year only widened the divide between who he had been and what he had become. But in every cowboy’s life, there comes a time when he has to stop and make a stand.

To make this new Overwatch better—to make things right—he had to be honest with his team and himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and Cole Cassidy faced the world at dawn.

The community did call for the change and Overwatch casters stopped using the name in mid-August, so this was necessary. Cole Cassidy will make his debut on 26th October.
