Blizzard Cancels BlizzCon 2022 Online Show

The past few weeks and months have been rough for Blizzard due to workplace abuse allegations and the statewide lawsuit that followed. The company’s annual BlizzCon showings of 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to COVID-19, and now 2022’s show is also following suit.

In a letter to the game company’s community on Blizzard’s website, the developer said that putting on a massive show and event like BlizzCon takes a lot of time and energy. The company said that this time, its time is better spent towards “supporting our teams and progressing development of our games and experiences”.

“The first BlizzCon was held 16 years ago, and so much has changed in the time since—most notably, the multiple ways in which players and communities can come together and feel like they are a part of something bigger. Whatever the event looks like in the future, we also need to ensure that it feels as safe, welcoming, and inclusive as possible.”

So basically, Blizzard is taking some downtime to “reimagine BlizzCon”, when in fact it’s also taking time to reflect and possibly change itself from within due to the company’s recurring problems from within. Don’t forget: BlizzCon is the same event where ex-employee Alex Afrasiabi and his group would hang out at the infamous Cosby Suite, as well as having its developers mock a fan for suggesting that female WoW heroes should be dressed in something other than bikini armour.

Given all of this, it’s probably best for BlizzCon to take a break.
