Malaysia’s Esports Industry To Receive RM20 Million Via Bajet 2022 Initiative
Malaysia’s esports scene will be getting a capital boost for 2022.
According to the current Malaysian government’s finance minister Tengku Zafrul Tengku Aziz (via Lowyat.net), he said that the government has agreed to provide a whopping RM20 million to the local esports industry, out of the total of RM332.1 billion as part of Bajet 2022. Part of that RM20 million will need to be used specifically for drone sports; RM5 million to be exact.
Furthermore, esports teams and athletes will get tax exemptions on tournament prizes, meaning pro players in Malaysia will get to keep their winnings instead of paying tax for them.
The full details of the RM20 million were yet to be revealed by Tengku Zafrul. But generally, this means bigger rewards for players. And possibly more MOBA and battle royale tournaments in tow for 2022 since that’s all the rage in Malaysia esports these days. As for fighting games, Overwatch, and other esports titles in Malaysia? That remains to be seen.
