RGG Studio Is Working On A New Non-Yakuza IP

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) has been on a roll for the past few years with Yakuza Like A Dragon and most recently, Lost Judgment. According to a new interview, the Japanese developer is working on a brand new IP that’s not related to the Yakuza or Judgment franchises.

Speaking to Famitsu (as transcribed by ryokutya), RGG Studio director Masayoshi Yokoyama revealed their upcoming games will not be related to the Yakuza or Judgment franchises.

He said:

“We’re also working on unannounced titles outside of [Yakuza and Judgment]. We will continue to cherish the Judgement series.”

While a sequel to Yakuza Like A Dragon has already been confirmed since October 2021, the future of the Judgement franchise might be in jeopardy due to an ongoing alleged dispute with lead actor Takuya Kimura’s (who plays the protagonist Takayuki Yagami) talent agency.

In July 2021, Japanese showbiz news site Nikkan Taishu reported that Takuya Kimura’s talent agency had been blocking PC versions of games in the Judgment series because they didn’t want him to appear in them. As such, we might not be getting a new Judgment game ever again if this issue doesn’t get resolved.

It will be interesting to see what RGG Studio will work on. The Yakuza franchise has been going on for a while now. Perhaps it’s time for something new.

In the meantime, check out our review of Lost Judgment here.
