Star Citizen Crowdfunding Surpasses A Whopping US$400 Million
By Alleef Ashaari|November 22, 2021|0 Comment
It’s another milestone for the long-gestating Star Citizen, as the game has now raised over US$400 million in crowdfunding less than two years after reaching US$300 million. At the time of writing, 3,365,457 players have contributed a total of US$402,823,766.
The game is also currently free-to-play until 1 December 2021 to commemorate the game’s in-game intergalactic Aerospace Expo on planet microTech.
Star Citizen is currently having a free-fly period, which runs until December 1, coinciding with the in-game Intergalactic Aerospace Expo on the planet microTech. During the expo, ships from different manufacturers in the game will be available to fly or drive for free. You can download the game on the official website here.
However, despite achieving this new milestone, it doesn’t seem like Star Citizen is any closer to fully launching its single-player campaign, Squadron 42. The last update we received from Cloud Imperium Games founder Chris Roberts last year (in late 2020) was that the game will be released when it’s complete, whenever that may be.
He stated:
“Squadron 42 will be done when it is done, and will not be released just to make a date, but instead only when all the technology and content is finished, the game is polished, and it plays great. Over the past few years, I’ve seen more than a few eagerly awaited titles release before they were bug-free and fully polished.
This holiday season is no exception. This is just another reminder to me of why I am so lucky to have such a supportive community, as well as a development model that is funded by people that care about the best game possible, and not about making their quarterly numbers or the big holiday shopping season.
It is best to not show Squadron 42 gameplay publicly, nor discuss any release date until we are closer to the home stretch and have high confidence in the remaining time needed to finish the game to the quality we want.”
Star Citizen was originally announced 2012, with pre-production beginning in 2010. It’s been a decade and we’re still no closer to an official release date or window.
