Penang Is Getting An Intel Manufacturing Facility Worth US$7 Billion
The Malaysian Investment Development Authority has announced that Intel will be building a new US$7.1 billion manufacturing facility in the island renowned for its awesome food and literal grub hub: Penang (via Reuters).
This is made a thing because of the ongoing global semiconductor shortage that’s affecting all bouts of technology: GPUs, motherboards, what-have-yous. While the facility is years away from production, the additional capacity will help alleviate the shortages and hopefully reduce the chance of a worldwide economic fallout.
Speculation points to Intel investing in Malaysia in order to counter Chinese influence, with the US government aiming to shore up domestic production and protect itself from supply side shocks in regions beyond its control.
