Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising Seems Like A Fun 2D Side Quest

Since its Kickstarter years ago, the throwback RPG Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes has been generating quite a buzz among retro RPG fans from the 90s since it’s basically the revival of the Suikoden franchise, in all but name & licensing.

Of course, to start the journey proper, one needs an introductory game of sorts using bits and pieces of the game’s new lore but also a more accessible kind of title. Enter Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising, a spin-off game that’s meant to draw in newcomers.

Based on the two hours we’ve played so far, it’s doing a bang-up job at easing players into its rose-tinted throwback world. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising is a 2D action platformer where your party members are mapped onto the attack buttons in real time. You walk around the game’s town hub and multitude of dungeons in 2D fashion, jumping, platforming, and killing beasts and monsters for resources and experience points. You need resources to upgrade your character’s skills and stats: buffing CJ’s gear means she can double jump while upgrading Garoo’s arsenal will allow him to parry enemy attacks. It’s simple and straightforward, but definitely fun thanks to the smooth 90s controls.

Check out our gameplay of the preview build below to see what we mean. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising will be out in April 2022 for PC and consoles. Meanwhile, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is slated for 2023.
