Ms. Marvel Trailer Breakdown: Kamala Khan, Red Dagger, Quantum Bands & Nega-Bands

Marvel Entertainment and Disney+ have released the first trailer for Ms. Marvel. It is slated to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on 8 June 2022.
The official synopsis reads:
Marvel Studios’ Ms. Marvel is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega-fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels invisible both at home and at school—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?
Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. The cast also includes Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer and Nimra Bucha.
Let’s break down the trailer:
We see a girl named Zoe Zimmer (played by Laurel Marsden) bullying Kamala Khan (played by Iman Vellani). In the comics, she also started off bullying Kamala, but later grew to become one of her closest friends and one of the few people to know her identity as Ms. Marvel.
Matt Lintz plays Bruno Carrelli, who is one of Kamala’s true friends. In the comics, Bruno is one of the first people to know about Ms. Marvel and he has a crush on Kamala.
In the comics, one defining trait of Kamala Khan is that she’s a huge fan of the Avengers and Captain Marvel in particular.
In the comics, Kamala is an Inhuman, which is how she gets her powers to embiggen and alter her body mass to stretch and change her physical form. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be different, as we see her wearing a bracelet and her eyes change colours, indicating that that is how she will get her powers in this version.
Plus, her powers now look like they’re closer to DC Comics’ Green Lantern. She can seemingly create blue hard light constructs.
Let’s see who in the comics can use hard light constructs or use bracelets to draw their power.
However, there is one Marvel hero who uses hard light constructs like these and his/her name is Quasar. In the comics, Quasar is an individual given cosmic powers via the Quantum Bands (which are bracelets) by an entity named Eon. There have been multiple Quasars, including Wendell Vaughn and others.
Another bracelet-wielding hero was the original Captain Marvel in the comics, the Kree hero named Mar-Vell. The Nega Bands gave him his powers.
Red Dagger, whose real name is Kareem (played by Aramis Knight), is one of the few original characters introduced in the Ms. Marvel comics. He migrated from Pakistan to New Jersey City and he uses his skills to be a vigilante named Red Dagger.
There you have it, folks. There’s not much that the trailer actually reveals in terms of plot, so we’ll have to wait and see. Until then, excelsior!
