PlayStation Lays Off 90 Employees As Part Of “Global Transformation”
Sony Interactive Entertainment and PlayStation have apparently laid off over 90 of their employees in the United States. According to the report from Axios, the layoffs were part of a “global transformation”. The 90 jobs were mostly from the PlayStation sales and marketing divisions.
In the report, one of the employees affected by the layoffs told Axios that they were disappointed that PlayStation didn’t inform them about the cuts sooner. What is the reason for the layoffs? It seems like PlayStation is shifting towards direct-to-consumer marketing, and they’re leaving behind retail and physical games marketing.
For instance, current Sony and PlayStation job listings for marketing roles include several positions for their subscription services. This isn’t totally unexpected, considering that the company recently announced a massive overhaul of their PlayStation Plus content offerings and packages.
