Ex-Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed Top Developer Secretly Working For Tencent
You may not remember Ashraf Ismail, but many folks did. He was a high-profile Assassin’s Creed game developer for Ubisoft before he was dismissed from the company in mid-2020.
Turns out he’s been busy since he was fired from the French company. He’s been helping with the development of a game at Tencent according to Axios. He is serving as “a consulting creative director” with Tencent’s TiMi studio group. The studio is staffed by several other ex-Ubisoft Montreal developers and used to work on past AC games led by Ismail.
This could be seen as a second chance for a developer who was fired due to allegations of abusing his power at Ubisoft, which led to a MeToo reckoning in the game industry a couple of years ago. He also lied about his marital status in courting female fans and possibly Ubisoft employees. But hey, he’s been behaving himself since, despite the fact that Tencent never announced him coming on board the project.
“During our work with Ash, he has carried himself in a professional manner and has consistently shown an eagerness to learn and grow as both a team member and person,” according to a TiMi company representative.
“We strive to provide a safe, respectful working environment for all and will continue to do so as our team grows and expands.”
