Prey is a prequel movie set in the Predator franchise, and it’s coming to Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia on 5 August 2022. Courtesy of Disney+ Hotstar, we joined the press conference for Prey, which was attended by Amber Midthunder (Naru), Dakota Beavers (Taabe), Dan Trachtenberg (Director) and Jhane Myers (Producer).

They answered several interesting questions, but one of them had Prey director Dan Trachtenberg revealing how he came up with the title of the movie.

During the press conference, he said:

“It was actually when I emailed the pitch of this (Prey) to an executive at 20th Century, and it was in that initial pitch. I think that largely because I knew they were deep into either prep or production for the last Predator movie (the 2018 The Predator directed by Shane Black), it felt like too good of an idea to hold onto.

I felt like the way in was if I could pitch them something that functions like Star Wars at the time, where they had the main trilogy and they had these other offshoots.

And then I thought that Prey had the exact same double meaning that Predator does, so the title can function just like Predator while still being its own title, so that this movie could feel like its own movie.

That sort of has always been the drive for me thinking about remakes or adaptations or sequels or like really hoping that you can make a movie that is a great movie on its own. And when you include the IP and all the links to the franchise in it, it just makes it even better.

It’s not solely reliant on being that IP to be a good movie and that’s what I was hoping this could be.”

With director Dan Trachtenberg at the helm, indigenous actor Amber Midthunder stars as the film’s hero, Naru, a warrior who protects her tribe from the otherworldly threat. The cast also includes Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp, Dane DiLiegro, and Stefany Mathias.
