VCT 2022: Stage 2 Masters Copenhagen – Paper Rex Secure Grand Final Spot
By Lewis Larcombe|July 23, 2022|1 Comment
Just like last Masters, OpTic has fallen into the lower bracket after losing their upper bracket final match versus Paper Rex.
VCT Stage 2 Masters resumed last night and to start off the night we were blessed with the highly anticipated match-up between North America’s OpTic Gaming and Asia-Pacific’s Paper Rex. The winner would be guaranteed a spot in the grand final.
This will be massive for Paper Rex as this will be their first international grand final as they aim to put Southeast Asia and APAC on the map as a region to be internationally feared.
As for the GreenWall, all isn’t lost just yet as they’ve been in this position before back in Iceland. OpTic lost to LOUD in the upper bracket final and managed to climb their way back up to face LOUD and ended up winning the entire tournament.
To begin the series, OpTic picked Haven, a map they were confident on, and their confidence seemed well deserved as they took the initial two rounds. But this was quickly thwarted as Paper Rex maintain composure and stuck with their aggressive playstyle and went on to win nine out of the next ten rounds left in the half.
With the score already at 9–3, Paper Rex went on to close out the series winning the four remaining rounds they required to claim the first map 13–3. Although the scoreline doesn’t show it, the duels between the two Chambers in Jaccob “yay” Whiteaker for OpTic and Jason “f0rsakeN” Susanto for PRX were nothing short of a masterclass as both showcased the agent to the best of their abilities.
On to Paper Rex’s pick of Bind, on paper, PRX had an extremely high chance of winning this map as they hadn’t lost on Bind in the last eight times they played it. But in contrast to the last game, OpTic came out of the gates swinging as they started off the map on a seven-round win streak.

Regardless of PRX’s efforts, managing to take three rounds, the GreenWall gave the Southeast Asian side a taste of their own medicine as they closed out the half 9–3. The second half was a bit more even but ultimately, OpTic took the map 13–9.
With the series tied at 1–1, the third and final map of the series was to be played on Fracture, OpTic’s signature map. Although DRX obliterated the GreenWall last time they played this map, they were still very confident in their experience on Fracture.
But what they needed to keep in mind is that Paper Rex has excelled on this map throughout Masters so far. With f0rsakeN and OpTic’s Victor “Victor” Wong both locking in Neon, analysts assured us that this was destined to be an extremely fast-paced map. And fast-paced it was with Paper Rex taking the first few rounds in the blink of an eye.
By round 6, the scoreline seemed even with it being 3–2 in favour of OpTic, but as PRX continued to maintain aggression, Rex went on to take the rest of the rounds in the half, concluding in a 9–3 score yet again.

With the help of Benedict “Benkai” Tan’s Breach topping the scoreboard, PRX were able to close out the series 13–5 and take the series 2–1. Meaning that the Singaporean organisation has solidified their spot in the grand final that will take place on 24 July at 11:00 PM (GMT+8). They will go on to play the winner of OpTic and FunPlus Phoenix which will be determined on 23 July at 11:00 PM (GMT+8).
