Singapore’s Creative Technology Founder & Sound Blaster Father Has Died
By Jonathan ToyadVerified|January 5, 2023|0 Comment
The chairman and chief executive of Creative Technology, Sim Wong Hoo, has passed away yesterday on Wednesday. He was 67.
The cause of death was not disclosed (via Straits Times), though Creative said he died peacefully. Here is the official statement:
“On behalf of all staff of the company, the board expresses its deepest sorrow over the death of Mr Sim and conveys its condolences to his family.”
Sim founded the Singapore-based tech company in 1981 and has spearheaded the company since the beginning. For those who don’t know, Creative Technology is well-known for its Sound Blaster sound cards, wireless speakers, headphones, and even fancy soundbars. But every 90s PC gamer will remember the game-changing Sound Blaster since it’s the most popular sound card to buy for desktops back in the day. Remember DOS, 386s, 486s, and Voodoo graphics cards? Yeah, those were crazy old-school times.
He also fought against Apple co-founder Steve Jobs over their company’s portable music players. His company sued them in 2006 for patent infringement involving the iPod and walked away with US$100 million as a settlement.
After being delisted from NASDAQ stock exchange and keeping quiet since the settlement -the Apple iPod was more popular than Creative’s mp3 player- Creative made a comeback with the Super X-Fi, an audio technology that lets headphone users experience sound in expansive three-dimensional detail.
Rest in peace, Sim Wong Hoo. You will be missed; thank you for your contributions and for making your Singaporean countrymen proud.
