Sony Decreases PlayStation VR2 Launch Output By Half Due To Low Pre-Orders
By Alleef AshaariVerified|January 31, 2023|0 Comment
Sony has reduced the launch output for its coming PlayStation VR2 headset after disappointing numbers for pre-orders. According to Bloomberg, they have slashed their PS VR2 shipments and launch output by half, from two million to only about one million units.
Sources say that Sony has told supply partners to expect reduced orders for display panels, which are part of the PS VR2 headset. Sony now expects to ship approximately 1.5 million units between the fiscal year of April 2023 and March 2024.
While statistics show that worldwide shipments of AR and VR headsets are expected to grow 32 percent to 12.8 million units this year, the market is currently dominated by Meta Quest with an almost 85 percent market share. Sony’s PlayStation VR apparently isn’t even in the top five providers of VR headsets.
PlayStation VR2 pre-orders began in November 2022, but there are probably a few possible factors as to why the pre-orders for the PS VR2 are so low. Firstly, VR remains a niche and more of a tech gimmick for most gamers. Secondly, it’s hard to justify the purchase of a PS VR2 when it’s more expensive than the PS5. Thirdly, the 30 or so launch titles aren’t really that impressive or enticing enough.
The PlayStation VR2 is officially launching on 22 February 2023 for RM2,799. For more details on the bundles, specs and pricing, head on over here.
