This Country Wants Atomic Heart Banned On Steam & Other Platforms
Atomic Heart is a fun first-person shooter romp made by Russian developers Mundfish despite its flaws. Of course, this being a Russian-flavoured game, some countries aren’t really fans of it.
Case in point: Ukraine. Due to Russia’s war against the country, the Ukraine government said it will write an official letter to Microsoft, Sony, and Valve to remove Atomic Heart from digital stores in Ukraine itself. They added that platform holders should consider “limiting distribution” in other countries.
The Ukraine Ministry of Digital Affairs said it will send the letter owing to the “toxicity of the game” and its possibility of transferring collected user data to third parties in Russia. Here’s what Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Alex Bornyakov has to say in a public statement:
“Regarding the situation with the release of the game Atomic Heart, which has Russian roots and romanticises communist ideology and the Soviet Union, The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine will send an official letter to Sony, Microsoft, and Valve requesting a ban on selling digital versions of this game in Ukraine.
We also urge limiting the distribution of this game in other countries due to its toxicity, potential data collection of users, and the potential use of money raised from game purchases to conduct a war against Ukraine.
According to media reports, the game’s development was funded by Russian enterprises. Therefore, we call for all users worldwide to avoid this game. We also want to emphasise that the game developers have not publicly condemned the Putin regime and the bloody war that Russia has unleashed against Ukraine.”
Mundfish is alleged to have the Russian government gain financially from the release of Atomic Heart, as the company’s investors include GEM Capital which has ties to the Russian-owned companies Gazprom and VTB Bank. Furthermore, Mundfish is partnered with VK (formerly Mail.RU), which is also majority owned by the state of Russia through Gazprombank. Also, Mundfish’s CEO Robert Bagratuni was a former Mail.RU creative director. You can basically see why people are boycotting Atomic Heart in support of Ukraine.
