Detective Pikachu 2 Could Be In Works In The Near Future

Pokémon fanatics can rejoice as it looks like a sequel to the 2019 hit movie, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, might actually be happening.
According to Deadline, director Jonathan Krisel, who worked on “Portlandia” and “Baskets,” is in talks to direct the live-action sequel for Legendary Entertainment, while Chris Galletta will write the script for the follow-up. And get this: Ryan Reynolds, who starred in the first movie as the voice of Pikachu, is rumoured to have a role in the sequel as well.
If you missed out on the first movie, here’s what you need to know: Detective Pikachu follows the story of a former Pokémon trainer named Tim Goodman (played by Justice Smith) who teams up with a talking Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds) to solve the mystery of his father’s death. The film was a huge success, earning US$430 million at the box office worldwide.
But despite the film’s popularity, Smith initially didn’t think a sequel would happen. “I don’t know if it’s going to happen,” he told Inverse in 2021. “I think we have to just kind of bury our hopes. I don’t think it’s going to happen. I really hope so though. Honestly, I’m such a huge fan, who knows, who knows? I hope so.”
And while we don’t have a release date for the sequel just yet, fans of the franchise can rest easy knowing that a follow-up to the original 2016 Detective Pikachu game is also in development for the Nintendo Switch.
The new game will continue the story of the first one and is being developed by Creatures Inc. So keep your eyes peeled for more Pokémon news because it looks like there’s plenty more to come.
