Project L Aims To Boost The Fighting Game Community; Confirmed Free-To-Play To Nobody’s Surprise

New information about Riot’s upcoming 2D fighting game Project L has surfaced, and it’s all from

One of the world’s top Street Fighter players, Bruce “Gamerbee” Hsiang, was invited to attend a Project L banquet held by Riot Games. He was allowed to talk about several key points surrounding the game, including points we’ve confirmed before when the game debuted.

  • Project L will be free-to-play. We’ve predicted this a year ago, but Riot has confirmed this.
  • The game’s controls include 3 buttons: Light, Medium, and Heavy attack. These will include other combination keys and directional inputs for special effects.
  • The game is still far from closed beta.
  • There will be no sequels for Project L; it’s billed as a live service game with updates, expansions, and such.
  • There will be a Retreating Guard mechanic: you can cancel backdashes while in defense.
  • The game has no cooldown system when it comes to characters pulling off their moves.
  • Pro players will not be prohibited from playing other fighting games.
  • Riot is working hard to coordinate with PlayStation and hope to create a fighting game with the same input lag across all platforms.

There’s no release date set for Project L at this point in time, but you can bet there will be a major announcement at this year’s EVO. The game is slated for PC and consoles, at the very least.
