There was a time in 2020 when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles license received a rather dark take on the mythos called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which basically pits the surviving member of the four-team ninja group in a future ruled by the Foot Clan and Shredder. It’s a pretty awesome if bleak take of the story, featuring a bunch of surprise turns and revelations.

And it turns out an unnamed studio is working on an action RPG based on this messed-up timeline, according to Paramount Global. A Polygon interview stated that Paramount Global senior vice president for games/emerging media Doug Rosen confirmed that a video game adaptation of the comic book story is in the works, and will be a darker and mature take on the franchise. The game will be similar in scope and tone to the 2018 God of War entries. The sole surviving turtle in this story will have access to all the TMNT weapons available: katana, nunchucks, bo staff, and sais.

Despite the one-player nature of the game, the title will feature flashbacks where you play other characters in the TMNT franchise. However, the game is still early in development, so don’t expect any news until the end of the year, or even next year.
