Epic Games Unveils Fun Facts About Unreal Engine In Southeast Asia

Epic Games has revealed some statistics about the Unreal Engine, including substantial growth in Monthly Active Users of Unreal Engine with around a 30 percent uptick in Asia alone. This growth can be attributed to the release of Unreal Engine 5, which enables creators to realise next-generation real-time 3D content and experiences with greater freedom, fidelity, and flexibility.

Unreal Engine 5 was initially released in April 2022. Recently, the company also connected with local developer communities in Southeast Asia by introducing initiatives such as the Women Creators Programme as well as launching Unreal Authorised Training Centres (UATC) to develop local talent. In 2023, Epic Games plans to make its tools more accessible and give creators more power to do what they do best.

In the Women Creators Programme, 21 women were shortlisted — including Singaporean Digital Creative Director Jessica Tan, Indonesian Producer Ellen Xie, and Visual Effects Artist Zubaida Nila, who is representing Malaysia — where they had the opportunity to showcase their exceptional short films.

Meanwhile, Unreal Authorised Training Centres (UATC) and Unreal Authorized Instructors (UAI) will help to train the next generation of creators and professionals — equipping them with the necessary skills to be better prepared for the constantly evolving and highly competitive job market. These include 7 UATCs and 14 UAIs in the region, as of 2022.

Check out the statistics about the adoption of Unreal Engine in the Southeast Asian/Asian Pacific region below:

  • Over 50% of next-gen games that have been announced are being built with Unreal Engine, including the Indonesian-based Stairway Games’ Coral Island, which is also a MegaGrant recipient and the Malaysian-based Passion Republic’s GigaBash.
  • About 80 of the most highly anticipated games slated for release this year are powered by Unreal Engine.
  • The top 3 automakers in every region are utilising Unreal Engine in their development — with Toyota, Nissan, and Hyundai as notable examples for Asia Pacific.
  • 250% increase in Unreal Engine-powered human-machine interface (HMI) users — the trend expected to continue in 2023, with Sony and Honda’s new EV coming equipped with HMI built on Unreal Engine.
  • About 44% increase year-on-year in the number of Unreal Engine film and TV projects — bringing the total to more than 500.
  • More live events and broadcasts leveraging game engine technology to deliver unique experiences, from interactive VR concerts to producing the opening sequence of Singapore’s most prestigious television award ceremony that wowed many viewers.
  • 40 of the largest architecture firms in the US have adopted the fast and easy visualisation tool, Twinmotion.
  • Companies across the architecture industry want to improve their real-time capabilities — 61% indicating that they plan to onboard 11 or more game engine users within 24 months.
