Black Knight Director Reveals The Origins Of The English Name For The Korean Netflix Series

Courtesy of Netflix Malaysia, we were lucky enough to participate in a Black Knight press conference featuring cast members Kim Woo-bin, Song Seung-heon, Kang You-seok, and Esom, as well as director Cho Ui-Seok.
During the press conference, director Cho Ui-Seok was asked about the origins of the name, “Black Knight”.
He said:
“So, in the daytime, these deliverymen, they deliver oxygen and supplies to the people, but at night, they come together as the so-called Black Knight. They are refugee-turned-deliverymen, and they come together, and they try to protect and deliver necessities to the refugees.
You know, it’s good to think of them as a group of knights who are deliverymen by day and actual black knights by night.”
In another question, he also answered why he decided to direct his first-ever series with Black Knight:
“Firstly, when I read the webtoon, the original webtoon, I really loved the universe that was built and there’s the existence of hunters that the deliverymen have to fight against in order to deliver the daily necessities. I loved that setup in the storyline and I spoke to the original creator and we actually adapted quite a lot of it for screenplay and the original writer was very open to that happening, so thankfully, we were able to create the show.”
The series follows the journey of refugee Sa-wol, and the legendary deliveryman 5-8, as he takes on the all-powerful Cheonmyeong Group in a dystopian portrayal of Korea devastated by severe air pollution, making it uninhabitable without an oxygen mask.
Black Knight premieres worldwide on 12 May 2023, only on Netflix.
