Blizzard Reveals Overwatch 2 Ping System Changes Coming During The Mid-Season
By Lewis "lickety" Larcombe|May 2, 2023|0 Comment
If you spend an unhealthy amount of time, losing your mind in Overwatch 2—like myself—then you’ll be happy to know that the developers are making some changes to the game’s Ping system. This system was a popular addition to the game, as it allows players to communicate with each other more effectively without having to use a mic.
While the Ping system has been helpful, there have been some issues with how information is shared. For example, the “Group Up” ping sometimes says “I’m with you” instead, which can be confusing. Luckily, a Systems Designer named Gavin Winter has confirmed that updates are on the way later in Season 4.

Winter explained that a mid-season patch is coming, which will include a new setting for “contextual pings.” This means that when aiming at an allied hero, players will have the option to control whether contextual pings for Group Up and Need Healing are used. The default setting will be “Off.”
Winter admitted that there were some mistakes made with communication wheel adjustments going from the original Overwatch to OW2, but these have been fixed. However, he did point out that although some players have complained about the Ping system, the number of players who want this change is “likely much smaller than the number of players that do not want this feature.” That’s why it’s taken some time to be implemented.
Winter also recommended that players change their default Ping Wheel options from the .18 second default to a number like 3 to avoid placing the wrong pings in the world. He said that the team is working on other solutions to the Ping system, but for now, players can expect some much-needed new options once the mid-season patch arrives.
