Project Mugen Revealed; Is An Open World Urban Fantasy Anime Game

NetEase Games’ next big free-to-play project has a trailer out, and it’s looking as colourful as intended.

Dubbed Project Mugen, the Thunder Fire Studio/Naked Rain-developed game is a free-to-play urban open-world RPG. It will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, iOS, Android, and cloud streaming.

Project Mugen is our love letter to urban fantasies,” said Thunder Fire Studio senior marketing manager Riten Huang in a press release. “We wanted to create a world that players could relate to, yet find enough mysteries to keep them coming back. The city is alive, and every player will have their unique journey through it.”

NetEase Games senior vice president Ethan Wang added, “Today’s unveiling of Project Mugen extends beyond this announcement; it represents NetEase Games’ spirit of global collaboration, creativity, and innovation to push the envelope in interactive storytelling. This project draws on development talent from Hangzhou to Montreal, reflecting our dedication to transcending boundaries and redefining gaming experiences. By merging a modern metropolis setting with elements of mysticism, we’re excited to create a world where every player can find a moment that resonates with them.”

Check out the debut gameplay trailer and key feature list below. In any case, this may be on any anime lover/gacha game aficionado’s radar. It seems to have it all: giant battles with space chicks, scifi monsters, fun city traversal elements, bikes, and whatnot. The game has no release date yet, but you can pre-register now.

Features

  • Urban, Open-World Setting – Explore a vast map that delivers a rich city life experience. From neon-lit nightlife to serene parks, every corner of the city holds a story. Engage in open exploration, scaling skyscrapers, diving into subways, and interacting with a dynamic environment that reacts to your every move.
  • Unique Combat Experience – Engage in team-based combat with four characters, each having different attributes that synergize with each other. Utilize environmental objects in battle and make use of the urban terrain to deal with monsters in various ways.
  • Captivating Artistic Style – Project Mugen is more than a game; it’s a visual journey. The art direction, a blend of modern aesthetics with ethereal touches, promises to captivate players at every turn.
  • Fast Paced Traversal and Vehicles – Every character has a basic movement skill such as parkour, swinging, or wall-climbing. Some characters also have a unique travel ability based on their individual identity, like riding a special war hammer. Players can also intercept and ride vehicles like cars in the city.
