Shiren The Wanderer Is The Original Roguelike Series That’s Coming Back Next February
For those who love the roguelike genre and subgenre -and the procedurally-generated levels mechanic- in their RPGs, shooters, and games of choice, they should remember that old-school series like Shiren The Wanderer are the progenitors and predecessors. Since 1995, Japan got a taste of hardcore 2D topdown roguelike turn-based action RPGing, which most likely influenced titles like Diablo and others of its ilk.
Why bring this up? We’re getting a sixth iteration of that classic title courtesy of publisher Spike Chunsoft, and in English. Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island will be coming to Nintendo Switch on 27 February 2024 and in English. The game will be implementing the “Mystery Dungeon” system featuring endless gameplay, random levels, and new challenges for even the most seasoned of roguelike players.
The last Shiren the Wanderer game is Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate which came out on PlayStation Vita in 2016 (along with a Nintendo Switch port in 2020). Wow! Check out the screenshots & trailer below.
