Capcom Breaks New Ground With Dragon’s Dogma 2 As Their First $70 Title
By Lewis LarcombeVerified|November 30, 2023|0 Comment
In a bold move, Capcom has officially entered the US$70 gaming price point with their highly anticipated release, Dragon’s Dogma 2. The company wasted no time, opening pre-orders shortly after unveiling a slated release date of 22 March 2024.
The standard edition of Dragon’s Dogma 2 in the United States is set at US$69.99 across platforms such as. This marks a US$10 increase compared to earlier releases like Street Fighter 6 and the Resident Evil 4 remake earlier this year.
Here’s the breakdown of Dragon’s Dogma 2 prices:
Capcom’s decision to adopt the US$70 price tag aligns with their president’s stance, as Haruhiro Tsujimoto expressed during the Tokyo Game Show in September. Tsujimoto stated that he believed game prices were too low, citing the substantial increase in development costs compared to the Famicom (NES) era. He argued that raising unit prices was a necessary and healthy business move, especially with the rising wages in the industry.
Capcom’s decision to join the US$70 pricing trend follows a pattern set by other major publishers. Take-Two set the precedent in August 2020 with NBA 2K21, and subsequently, Activision, Sony, EA, Square Enix, and Nintendo have all followed suit. Ubisoft is also gearing up for its first US$70 game with Skull & Bones. Capcom’s move underscores a wider industry shift towards acknowledging the rising costs of game development and adapting pricing models accordingly.
