Dota 2 ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 – Day 2: Triumphs & Surprises

The conclusion of the second day of Dota 2 ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023 brought unexpected outcomes. In Group A, Azure Ray and Gaimin Gladiators emerged as the leaders, while G2.iG and Team Falcons claimed the top spots in Group B. On the flip side, Wawitas Sagazes and 9Pandas find themselves at the bottom of Groups A and B.

Similar to the initial day’s group stage clashes, the second day featured compelling matchups and standout individual performances. We’ve compiled the standout moments from the group stage matches of Dota 2 ESL One KL 2023 on day two.

G2.iG faced off against Team Liquid in their third Bo2 group-stage encounter. In a surprising turn of events, the Chinese team convincingly defeated the European powerhouse. G2.iG’s offlaner, JT, showcased an impressive performance with Magnus, contributing to their victory in the decisive game.

The match between Liquid and iG was characterized by aggressive plays from both teams, featuring heroes with disabling abilities engaged in constant battles from the laning stage. G2.iG secured an early gold advantage and played cautiously. Monet’s Chaos Knight outfarmed Micke’s Spectre, obtained the Aegis, and initiated a push on Dire’s top racks.

A pivotal teamfight unfolded when JT executed a well-timed Reverse Polarity (RP), catching Dawnbreaker, Invoker, and Spectre near the tier 4 towers and skewering them back into his team. This led to a massacre of Liquid’s heroes, who promptly bought back to defend their base, eliminating iG’s supports in the process.

Another teamfight near the Radiant’s Roshan Pit saw a perfectly executed RP stunning the BKB-activated Spectre, and Dawnbreaker turned the tide in favour of iG. Liquid conceded the battle and surrendered by tapping out after three minutes.

Gaimin Gladiators, finalists of Dota 2 TI12 and Major winners, managed to secure an undefeated record on the second day after a challenging start to their ESL One campaign. The European team turned their fortunes around, winning all their group-stage matches and clinching the top spot in their group.

In their first series, GG clashed with Blacklist International, a newly formed SEA team. Dyrachyo’s Luna, equipped with Satanic, BKB, and Manta Style, orchestrated a comeback with a triple kill before concluding the game. GG faced initial setbacks in fights but eventually secured a victory.

The second game against Blacklist showcased GG’s dominance from the start, with Quinn’s Pangolier, Dyrachyo’s Alchemist, and Ace’s Lycan overwhelming Blacklist’s heroes in every engagement.

In the second series against Wawitas Sagazes, GG dismantled the SA team, concluding the first game in just 18 minutes. The second game followed a similar pattern but was extended for an additional 10 minutes. GG’s coordinated team play, coupled with a strategic drafting approach, was evident in this decisive victory.

Tundra’s initial Bo2 Dota 2 match against LGD Gaming stretched for an hour. While LGD Gaming seemed poised for victory by destroying all Dire buildings and securing Mega Creeps, Tundra adopted a defensive strategy, resisting Mega Creeps for an extended duration.

LGD Gaming couldn’t withstand the physical damage from Timado’s Luna, who became formidable with items like Linken’s Sphere, Swift Blink, Refresher Orb, Silver Edge, and BKB. Shiro’s Weaver attempted to hasten the game’s conclusion by purchasing a Divine Rapier but was controlled by Tundra’s heroes, leading to the loss of the Rapier.

Undeterred, Shiro acquired another Rapier, led his team down the middle lane, and successfully destroyed Dire’s Ancient. The occurrence of a double Rapier purchase is rare in competitive Dota 2, making Shiro the first pro to achieve this in Dota 2 ESL One KL 2023.

Team Falcons faced 9Pandas in their Dota 2 ESL One KL group-stage matchup. The first game in this Bo2 series extended to an hour, resulting in victory for 9Pandas.

The second game produced a surprising outcome as Falcons secured a win in just 28 minutes. Cr1t’s well-timed Hoof Stomp with his Centaur Warrunner played a crucial role in this swift victory.

This unconventional pick proved effective, as Falcons held a substantial 10k gold lead over the CIS team. Following critical losses, 9Pandas headed to Roshan’s Pit to secure the Aegis for their carry.

Falcons, utilizing SOD’s heroes and Centaur’s Stampede buff, swiftly reached the pit. V-Tune’s Templar Assassin obtained the Aegis but was instantly stunned by Mar1ne’s Dragon Knight. Cr1t’s Centaur blinked into the pit, stunning three heroes with Hoof Stomp, resulting in the demise of Zeus, TA, and Treant Protector. After eight minutes, Falcons sieged Dire’s high ground and secured a draw in the series.
