Sega Files New Trademarks, Including Three Old Franchises

After Sega’s The Game Awards 2023 announcement showcasing its classic game remake revival, many are anticipating another Sega renaissance like in the 90s, but for the next few years. And it seems like we might be getting more revivals of older titles.

Sega recently filed four trademarks on 6th December (via Gematsu). They are:

Anyone who has played games during the 90s and primarily on the Sega Megadrive/Genesis should recognize the last three titles. Kid Chameleon was a 2D sidescroller where you wear different masks for power-up.

Altered Beast was a Sega arcade 2d action title where you transform into a werewolf/werebear/dragon/weretiger as a powerup, killing Greek-inspired monsters and unravelling meta-endings. The Sega Megadrive port was touted as near arcade-perfect, selling Megadrives along with the title as a neat bundle in the West.

Eternal Champions is a 2D fighting game for Sega Megadrive and Sega CD where you play as time-displaced warriors from different eras fighting to get back to their original time period. It also had gory finishing moves; a clear reaction to Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat 2 back in the 90s.

While the trademarks could mean a current-gen port/legal emulation for the title in a possible retro game collection under Sega, there’s hope that these will be full-fledged remakes. As a Sega classic gaming fan, here’s hoping!
