The entire first season of Marvel’s ECHO is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar Malaysia. I’ll be discussing heavy spoilers so if you haven’t seen it or want to avoid spoilers, now’s your chance to stop reading. Check out my spoiler-free review of ECHO Season 1 here.
The synopsis reads:
Marvel Studios presents “Echo,” spotlighting Maya Lopez as she is pursued by Wilson Fisk’s criminal empire. When the journey brings her home, she must confront her own family and legacy. “Echo” stars Alaqua Cox (“Hawkeye”) as Maya Lopez, as well as Chaske Spencer (“Wild Indian,” “The English”), Tantoo Cardinal (“Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Stumptown”), Devery Jacobs (FX’s “Reservation Dogs,” “American Gods”), Zahn McClarnon (“Dark Winds,” FX’s “Reservation Dogs”) and Cody Lightning (“Hey, Viktor!” “Four Sheets to the Wind”), with Graham Greene (“1883,” “Goliath”) and Vincent D’Onofrio (“Hawkeye,” “Daredevil,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”), who returns to the villainous role of Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.

After getting into the accident as a child, Maya’s father brings her to New York and puts her in martial arts classes. This is where Maya meets Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin for the first time, as her father is working with him.
In a flashback scene before the events of Hawkeye (since Kingpin still has both eyes intact), Kingpin consoles Maya who’s grieving her father’s death by giving her some work to “take out” targets.
It’s only the first episode and Daredevil already shows up? Plus, it’s interesting to see Daredevil wearing his old pre-She-Hulk costume and also interesting to note that Maya already had prior experience fighting a superhero before the events of the Hawkeye series.
She even holds her own against Daredevil during the fight, which is impressive.
We already knew that he survived but this is the first time that we see him with the eyepatch, just like in the comics in the aftermath of his getting shot by Maya.
In the comics, Maya doesn’t have any superpowers. She has great combat skills and can copy the fighting styles of others ala Taskmaster. However, the MCU version of Maya seems to be different, as she has somehow unlocked and gained some kind of power from her ancestors.
Maya’s ancestor was the first Choctaw and she was not human. It’s unclear what she was.
Skully helps make a shiny new prosthetic leg for Maya that features Chocktaw elements.
An alive Kingpin confronts Maya.
What will happen?
Yeah, even as a kid, Maya was hardcore.
The MCU version of Wilson Fisk AKA the Kingpin shares the same abusive childhood as the version of the character in Netflix’s Daredevil series. This is further proof that the MCU is taking at least parts of the Netflix Daredevil series as canon.
This is why Maya also has powers, as seen in Episode 2 when her hands also glowed and she exhibited super strength.
So, Maya is a descendant of Chafa, a powered individual from the past, and that’s how she has powers.
This is original to the MCU version of the character because the comic book version of Maya Lopez AKA Echo doesn’t have powers (at least until she became the host of the Phoenix Force).
This is Echo in the comics.
The best part of every superhero or comic book series. When the protagonist finally fully suits up.
And it turns out her sister and grandmother can also use these powers…
Remember when Aang defeated Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar The Last Airbender…
Well, look at this:
She went into the Kingpin’s memories and tried to help him overcome his trauma.
Did it work? We don’t know yet.
Now we know what the future holds for Vincent D’onofrio’s Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin in the MCU.
He’s going to be running for mayor.
In the comics, he ran for mayor and won. The biggest thing he did while being mayor was to introduce an anti-vigilante law in New York City. We might see the same thing happening in the MCU.
Want more context? Read the Devil’s Reign crossover event in Marvel Comics, which ran around 2021-2022. It took all the street level heroes in New York to fight back against Mayor Wilson Fisk.
