Deadpool & Wolverine Trailer Breakdown & Easter Eggs: TVA, Paradox, Cassandra Nova, Pyro, Patch & Secret Wars

Marvel Studios has revealed the first trailer for the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie.

The trailer is more than two minutes long but there are a lot of exciting easter eggs, so let the one and only ComicsLord break down the highlights of the trailer.

Wade Wilson Celebrates His Birthday Set After The Events Of 2018’s Deadpool 2, Features Returning Characters Such As Colossus And Negasonic Teenage Warhead

We get to see Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson celebrating his birthday with his friends, set after the events of Deadpool 2. Karan Soni’s Dopinder is there, as well as Colossus, Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio, Lewis Tan as Shatterstar, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and even Morena Baccarin as Vanessa.

The TVA Shows Up And Captures Deadpool

If you’ve never seen Loki Season 1 or Loki Season 2, you wouldn’t know who the TVA are. The TVA refers to the Time Variance Authority, an organization outside of time and space whose main goal is to preserve and protect the Sacred Timeline and the Multiverse.

Meet Paradox, Who Is Paradox?

Matthew Macfadyen plays Paradox (or Agent Paradox) in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Who is Paradox?

In the comics, Paradox started as a doppelganger created by Doctor Strange to act as his proxy, and his name was simply Strange. After refusing to be destroyed by Doctor Strange, he merged with another being from the Dark Dimension named Nobel and became Paradox. Paradox then became a friend of Clea Strange and stayed in the Dark Dimension.

However, the Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine seems to be an entirely different character, only sharing the same name as Paradox.

It’s more like that Paradox in Deadpool & Wolverine is a variant of Mobius M. Mobius whose name is Mr. Paradox or Agent Paradox.

The TVA Recruits Deadpool To Do Something

Deadpool’s mission for the TVA remains vague, but it probably involves killing targets. Who is the target? We still don’t know.

Cassandra Nova Possibly

Emma Corrin is potentially in the role of Cassandra Nova, the twin sister of Charles Xavier AKA Professor X.

In the comics, Cassandra is a “mummudrai,” a parasitic life form born bodiless on the astral plane. The mummudrai that became Cassandra became telepathically entangled with the future Charles Xavier, who possesses vast mutant telepathic powers. This granted Cassandra some psionic powers herself, including the ability to exit the womb and create a body.

Cassandra is Xavier’s ideological dark shadow, bent on destruction and genocide. She is most infamous for commanding an army of Sentinels to massacre 16 million mutants within the mutant homeland of Genosha.

Maybe Cassandra Nova will be the main villain of the movie.

Wolverine’s Patch Identity

In the comics, Patch is an identity used by Logan/Wolverine while he’s on secret undercover missions or most often while he’s in Madripoor.

As Patch, Logan is more suave and charming, sort of like a James Bond type. He wears an eyepatch, which is why his moniker is Patch.

It’s nice to see this side of Wolverine will be seen in live-action for the first time.

Aaron Stanford Reprises His Role As Pyro

Aaron Stanford reprises his role as Pyro from the 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films. His power is to manipulate fire but he can’t generate/create fire like the Human Torch.

Secret Wars Easter Egg Spotted Before Wolverine Shows Up

The trailer ends with Deadpool get flung through the air like a ragdoll.

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine finally shows up but we only get a glimpse of him.

But what’s interesting here is that there’s a torn page of a Secret Wars comic right beside Deadpool while he’s lying down.

In the comics, Incursions were the precursor to the Secret Wars. Incursions were first mentioned by name back in 2022’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

During the post-credits scene in that movie, Clea (played by Charlize Theron) appeared and warned Doctor Strange that his actions (by using the Dream-Walking spell from the Darkhold) have triggered an Incursion, before both of them enters a portal into what seems to be the Dark Dimension (Dormammu’s realm).

What is an Incursion? An Incursion is when two worlds from two different universe collide, destroying both universes in the process. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it seems that an Incursion is triggered when someone uses spells from the Darkhold. However, not much is explained about the Incursions.

In the comics, the concept of Incursions began in Jonathan Hickman’s New Avengers and Avengers runs (the Time Runs Out story arc), which led to the 2015 crossover event, Secret Wars. In the comics, there’s a way to stop Incursions, if one of the earths is destroyed, then its universe also dies, but the other earth and its universe survives. If not, then both earths and their respective universes will die. Ultimately, the heroes failed to stop the incursions. Even the Infinity Gauntlet powered by the Infinity Gems/Stones could only stop one Incursion before getting destroyed.

It turns out that the reason for the Incursions were that it was all part of a grand experiment of a race of super power aliens called the Beyonders. They were detonating the Molecule Man of each universe to spark Incursions, because they wanted to bear witness to the death of the Multiverse. Doctor Doom intercepted the Beyonders’ plans and used it to steal their powers. He became God Emperor Doom and took all the surviving worlds, combining them into one earth, Battleworld (this starting the Secret Wars story arc).

As we all well know, the Avengers Secret Wars movie is in the works, so we already know Secret Wars is confirmed.

Deadpool & Wolverine will be the only Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie coming out in 2024. It premieres in Malaysian cinemas in July 2024.
