Netflix has confirmed that its smash-hit Korean drama series Squid Game will be aired this year in the form of Season 2. A short trailer from Netflix confirms the news, showing a glimpse of the next sequel along with other blockbuster offerings.
The teaser trailer featured a brief clip of protagonist Gi-hun making a crucial decision at the end of Season 1. However, specific details regarding the second season’s plot remain under wraps. At least we can rest assured that the series will finally be making its grand debut on Netflix this year.
The production of Squid Game Season 2 will see the return of director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who earned an Emmy Award for his work on the first season, retaining his responsibilities as the director and executive producer for the entire second season.
The ensemble cast in the upcoming season showcases a remarkable range of talent and experiences. The returning fan favourites, including the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-hun) and the Recruiter (Gong Yoo), will undoubtedly captivate viewers with their compelling portrayals. Moreover, the introduction of a new character played by Park Gyu-young adds a fresh layer of excitement to the narrative.
The series made history by earning six Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for Hwang Dong-hyuk and Outstanding Lead Actor for Lee Jung-jae, solidifying its position as a groundbreaking and exceptional production. That’s not all, it garnered prestigious accolades such as a Gotham Award for ‘Breakthrough Series – Long Form’ and the People’s Choice Award for ‘Bingeworthy Show of the Year’. The series even received special recognition at the 2021 AFI Awards.
In addition to the new announcement, Netflix is bringing back several popular shows like Bridgerton, The Diplomat, Umbrella Academy, Rebel Moon, and Beverly Hills Cop. The platform will also introduce a wide range of brand-new shows and movies, such as 3 Body Problem, Avatar The Last Airbender live-action series, Back in Action, and Atlas.
